Robert Herbie Altizer, age 94, of Bristol, VA, formerly of Buchannan County, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024. He was born on November 7, 1929, to the late Henry and Maudie Altizer. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Delores Kay Altizer; daughter, Christy Altizer; son, Robert Timothy Altizer; son in law, Ricky Allen Slagle; brothers, Henry Altizer, Jr., Rush Altizer, Robert Carlis Altizer, and Leon Altizer.Herb served in the United States Army and fought in the Korean War. He earned several medals including a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, and a National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of Shakesville Church of Christ in Bristol, VA. Before retirement, he worked for Harmon Mining Corporation in Harmon, VA. Herb was also a member of United Mine Workers Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and wood working. He had a kind and giving heart and will be dearly missed.Left to cherish his memory are his children, Sandy Johnson (Patrick), Suzy King (Kenneth), Cathy Slagle, and Markus Altizer; six grandchildren; four step grandchildren; one great grandson; seven step great grandchildren; brother, Eugene Altizer; sister, Maxine Woodard; special friend, Melissa Viers; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.A gathering of remembrance will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Blevins Funeral Home from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. A funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM with Pastor David Freeman officiating. A committal service will follow at Mountain View Cemetery with friends and family serving as pallbearers.
